Songwriting Process & Meanings
My Creative Process
My process is quite simple, and I think is similar to what i hear other song writers have described. When I come across a small phrase or saying that I think is cool or rhythmic, I just write it down and save it for later.
The musical ideas or melodies just seem to come to me, often hearing them in my head. But these remain as indepdent ideas at first. When you hear them you have to capture then before they disappear.
The creative process of joining these independent ingrediats comes later. This is where the work begins, arranging and bringing together lyrics or phrases to the melodies.
Its a bit like magic when it happens if it happens, and you can kinda feel it when it does. But it dosent always work. So you just recast and try again.
Time
"Time" is essentially a song about seizing the moment. Don't hesitate. Life is short, so go ahead and take that chance, make the move. Jump right in. So simple but true. I use six string guitars and sone mandolin on this one.
Pink
"Pink" uses a simple, driving rhythm to set the overall mood of the song, which is quickly lifted by a warm underlying organ in the chorus. At its heart, the song is about colors and how they can make us feel. It is also a reflection on human differences. We all have favorite colors, specific memories, and unique experiences that shape our individual points of view.
Olivia
"Olivia" is song about a young girl we saw on the beach one day dancing alone by the ocean. Tyring to encourage my son,I thought it would be nice for him to go up say hello and maybe play with her, to make a new friend. But then it became clear Olivia was happy withinn here own world. She did not need anything or anybody else. She was beutifal and perfect as she was.
Something she said
"Something she said" came to me while sitting at the piano. I heard the melody of "once upon a time" from the notes I played and took it from there. Just before that moment, my wife had said something to me, that was very true and it just hit me. I wanted to just write a piano song like Paul does. This was my attempt.
